Things to do in the North Country

MAGNETIC HILL

Drive 1 mile north of the Pittsburg-Canadian border on Route 3 to the bottom of the hill, proceed about 1/2 mile and turn around so you are now facing south. Pull along sign in French that has instruction "1, 2, 3". Put your vehicle in neutral, your vehicle will be pulled backwards up the hill. You’ll be mystified.

MOUNT MEGANTIC OBSERVATORY

Approximately 25 miles from the Pittsburg-Canadian border at Note Dame Des Bois. Visitors are welcome from July 1st through Labor Day. The Quebec University Students study the planets and stars here. Take Route 3 to the Border, then Route 257 & 212 in Quebec.

COATICOOK, QUEBEC

From Canaan, Vermont take Route 141 in Quebec approximately 20 miles to Coaticook. Just North of the village is a scenic attraction called "The Gorge", which has a foot path to follow. A nice museum is located in the village center.

BEAVER BROOK FALLS

Route 145 South of Pittsburg village. A miniature Niagara Falls. Maintained by the Colebrook Kiwanis Club. A nice picnic area.

MOOSE WATCHING

Drive north of Pittsburg on Route 3, after you pass the First Connecticut Lake, watch the marshy areas for moose. If you see parked cars they are probably watching a moose or two. Be sure to bring a camera, and please pull fully off the road if you stop. Most of all, be careful, a MOOSE IS A WILD ANIMAL!

GOLF

The Balsam’s offers an eighteen hole championship course, Panorama Course designed by Donald Ross. The Colebrook Country Club offers a nine hole par 36 course.

TENNIS

The tennis courts in the Pittsburg Village are for public use.

FISHING

Don’t forget fishing in the Rivers, Ponds and Lakes. Either trolling or Fly fishing, Pittsburg has all that any fisherman could ask for.

SNOWMOBILING

This is a favorite activity of many in the area since their are only four seasons - June, July, August and Winter!
Check out the local clubs for information.
