Things to do in the North Country |
MAGNETIC HILL
Drive 1 mile north of the Pittsburg-Canadian border on Route 3 to the bottom of the hill, proceed about 1/2 mile and turn around so you are now facing south. Pull along sign in French that has instruction "1, 2, 3". Put your vehicle in neutral, your vehicle will be pulled backwards up the hill. Youll be mystified.
MOUNT MEGANTIC OBSERVATORY
Approximately 25 miles from the Pittsburg-Canadian border at Note Dame Des Bois. Visitors are welcome from July 1st through Labor Day. The Quebec University Students study the planets and stars here. Take Route 3 to the Border, then Route 257 & 212 in Quebec.
COATICOOK, QUEBEC
From Canaan, Vermont take Route 141 in Quebec approximately 20 miles to Coaticook. Just North of the village is a scenic attraction called "The Gorge", which has a foot path to follow. A nice museum is located in the village center.
BEAVER BROOK FALLS
Route 145 South of Pittsburg village. A miniature Niagara Falls. Maintained by the Colebrook Kiwanis Club. A nice picnic area.
MOOSE WATCHING
Drive north of Pittsburg on Route 3, after you pass the First Connecticut Lake, watch the marshy areas for moose. If you see parked cars they are probably watching a moose or two. Be sure to bring a camera, and please pull fully off the road if you stop. Most of all, be careful, a MOOSE IS A WILD ANIMAL!
GOLF
The Balsams offers an eighteen hole championship course, Panorama Course designed by Donald Ross. The Colebrook Country Club offers a nine hole par 36 course.
TENNIS
The tennis courts in the Pittsburg Village are for public use.
FISHING
Dont forget fishing in the Rivers, Ponds and Lakes. Either trolling or Fly fishing, Pittsburg has all that any fisherman could ask for.
SNOWMOBILING
This is a favorite activity of many in the area since their are only
four seasons - June, July, August and Winter!
